I’d been out visiting rural communities in southwest Uganda, shooting images of the women who work the soil. Come mid-afternoon, I was heading back along the dusty track, when I suddenly heard inspirational singing coming from a brick building.
I was welcomed like an old friend into the rudimentary, dusty main classroom where afternoon chapel was taking place. The light shining through the holes in the wall and the gritty, vibrant red-brick against the complimentary colours of the uniform made this scene a visual feast.
Looking through the viewfinder, I had dozens of little eyes staring up at me. I waited, knowing the scene needed an edge. All of sudden, the children burst into the most extraordinary, passionate song and as the eyes closed I shot several frames. As quick as it started, it had finished: an amazing show of the joyful nature of humankind.

JOURNEY INTO NAMIBIA

While on assignment in northern Namibia, I was given a chance to photograph a lady from the Himba tribe. It was a refreshing experience not to be asked for money. The shoot felt like a true collaboration between photographer and subject. The beauty of working with digital is that she could give me immediate approval of the images. The Himba tribe are very conscious about the way they look and spend a great deal of time creating this unique appearance. philipleeharvey.com
NORTHWEST PASSAGE CRUISE

All photographers are familiar with missing great shots, but sometimes God gives back. This fortuitous image was captured in the Canadian Arctic during a 2,000-mile voyage of the Northwest Passage. Like many passengers, I spent hours up on deck braving the cold in the hope of catching a fabulous shot of orcas, polar bears or the super-elusive narwhal. I nipped back down to my cabin to get a fresh camera battery and there, lo and behold, was this glorious, slimline berg beautifully framed in a porthole. Isn’t God great? imagepalace.co.uk
KOMODO NATIONAL PARK

This photograph is of Rizal, one of the crew aboard the Tiger Blue, a traditional Indonesian phinisi. I was on assignment at the Komodo National Park and while I got plenty of shots of the lethargic Komodo dragons, there was more excitement with the energetic crew. The boat ordinarily runs under engine power but the wind got up and Rizal scrambled to raise the sails. I caught him at this precarious moment while the boat was rocking, but he was so sure-footed he never looked like he was going to fall. katyandthebear.com

There are 250,000 pairs of king penguins breeding at Salisbury Plain, South Georgia, and the spectacle of birds cascading from the mouths of glaciers is visual overload. My brief was to capture the area’s stark beauty and its intriguing inhabitants. When we landed, I was tempted to fire off a volley of shots. Instead I waited and this moulting penguin came towards me. There’s a five-metre distance rule for wildlife on South Georgia but the animals rarely observe it. renatogranieri.com
