TMA Step Up: Meet the five partners offering journalism placements

News Step Up

The Travel Media Awards Step Up internship is excited to offer five young people from underrepresented backgrounds the opportunity to build a career in travel journalism.

Interns will spend four weeks at two partner companies (one focussed on journalism/publishing and another learning about public relations) for a total of eight weeks work experience.

The five organisations offering insight into the world of travel journalism and publishing are:

  • APL Media — publisher of National Geographic Traveller (UK), Food by National Geographic Traveller (UK) and content for national newspapers.
  • Ink Global — producers of in-flight magazines including easyJet Traveller magazine, Selamta (Ethiopian Airlines) and more.
  • Metro — the UK’s largest circulating daily newspaper, focused on digestible news that reaches five million people every day.
  • TTG Media — the world’s first weekly travel trade newspaper launched more than 70 years ago, with a focus on creating a more equitable travel media industry.
  • The Sun — the UK’s biggest news brand blending serious investigations, agenda-setting campaigns, political scoops and celebrity gossip.

Throughout the journalism placements, interns will be working on several editorial tasks, including:

  • Researching potential and ongoing stories.
  • Pitching and writing articles.
  • Learning about and assisting the wider team across the sub-editing, design, marketing and events desks.
  • Supporting with some administrative tasks.
