TMA Step Up: How to make your application stand out from the crowd
Previous years’ interns give advice for your application.
Are you ready to launch your career in travel media? The Travel Media Step Up internship is your chance to break into one of the most exciting sectors in publishing.
Over the course of the eight-week summer programme, you’ll gain hands-on experience, build industry connections and learn from leading professionals who shape the way travel stories are told.
With only five places available, the competition will be fierce. Your application needs to shine, so show us what makes you unique. Be bold, be authentic and make your submission memorable.
Here are some tips from successful 2024 and 2025 Step Up candidates:
1. Know your audience
Think media first, travel second. Passion for travel matters, but applications which read like personal wish-lists miss the point. Show how you’d create smart, audience-led content, not just talk about where you want to go.
2. Research, research, research
The best applications show a clear understanding of the organisations involved in the scheme. You don't need to know every little detail about the partners but showcasing an understanding of what they do and how they interact with consumers is key.
3. Understand the role
The TMA Step Up has launched careers in travel media and PR. Show you understand what the scheme and partner companies need, explain why you’re excited, and be clear about the skills, attitude, and value you’ll bring from day one.
4. Why this internship?
Tailor your application specifically to Step Up. The panel wants to see that you understand what makes this programme unique and why you’re the right fit. Show that you’ve thought about how the internship aligns with your skills, ambitions and passion for travel media, and explain why this experience matters to you at this stage of your career.
5. Show proof, not potential
Saying that you’re hardworking, passionate or a fast learner is too simple and overdone. Give concrete examples that demonstrate what you achieved, how you approached the challenge and the impact of your actions. It doesn’t have to be professional experience — contributions from university projects, part-time work or volunteering all count.
6. Don't rush it
Applications are open until Monday 26 January. Map out your answers and make a plan of action before writing. It's obvious which applications have been written quickly.
Please note the use of AI is not allowed in your application. Ultimately, the goal is to show your potential, adaptability and commitment to making the most of every opportunity the internship provides.
Ready to get to work on your application? The panel is excited to receive your submission. Don’t miss your chance to get a head start in the exciting world of travel media.
